Elexon

Brief

Develop an application to manage the processing of claims submitted by Balancing and Settlement Code parties (all electricity companies in England and Wales), for Past Notification Errors.

Business Case

Elexon (formerly The Electricity Pool) manages the electricity trading arrangements in England and Wales. Elexon procures, manages and operates services and systems, which enable the balancing and imbalance settlement of the wholesale electricity market and retail competition in electricity supply.

Contractual disputes between the generators, suppliers, traders and customers are complex, take a long time to resolve and involve large amounts of documentation. Several claims may arise from one dispute, in which case they are grouped together into an investigation.

Keeping track of claims, investigations and the related documentation is a complicated and time-consuming administrative task.

Implementation

We developed a system which maintains full details of each claim and investigation. It records the continuous flow of documents (and versions of those documents) which relate to each claim or investigation. As the work progresses, the status of each investigation is recorded and tracked.

The system allows new documents to be entered very quickly, based on predefined information. It provides comprehensive enquiry and reporting facilities to allow claims and investigations to be monitored.

Over 700 claims are active at any one time.

We wrote the application in Visual Basic, with a SQL Server 2000 database.

Benefits

Elexon can now process claims and investigations more quickly and efficiently and save substantial amounts of administrative time and effort. The parties to the disputes get a better service.
